Construction earnings data illustrates value of BCT education

A recently published interactive chart by the Hamilton Project at the Brookings Institution illustrates earnings data from the U.S. Census Bureau’s American Community Survey. The earnings profiles are separated by educational major and broken out as annual earnings and lifetime earnings. This set of charts (in part shown in the image above) illustrates quite nicely the earnings benefit in general of a bachelors degree and in particular of choosing a construction major. As shown in the image, a construction-related major's 50th percentile income is 36% higher than the average across all undergrad majors. This increases even further if a graduate degree is pursued. You can explore the data interactively for yourself here: http://hamiltonproject.org/earnings_by_major/...

Robert Malczyk speaks about engineered wood buildings

Robert Malczyk speaks about engineered wood buildings

Robert Malczyk, principal engineer of Vancouver-based firm Equilibrium Consulting, visited BCT last week to give a guest lecture on "Engineered Solutions in Wood". His lecture was the second installment in this semester's impromptu BCT lecture series “Building with Wood”, following Cassie Phillips of Weyerhaeuser. Fifteen years of design excellence and over a thousand successful projects have established Equilibrium as a leader in wood engineering worldwide. Their unique ability to take on complex structural challenges and find elegant, innovative, yet efficient solutions is exemplified in projects like the Frank Gehry-designed Art Gallery of Toronto, the Raleigh-Durham Airport roof structure, and the forthcoming IDB building at UMass Amherst, which will arguably be the most advanced modern wood structure in the eastern US. In reflecting upon the span of his own career, Robert not only gave career advice to the many students in attendance but also illustrated his firm's work in a detail-rich, visually stunning, and often very humorous manner. To learn more about Equilibrium's projects, follow the link at the...

Hoque and Weil participate in another successful Eureka! summer

Hoque and Weil participate in another successful Eureka! summer

BCT faculty Ben Weil and Simi Hoque participated in this summer’s Project Eureka! a partnership between CNS and Girls, Inc. of Holyoke to provide STEM education to middle and high school girls from underrepresented communities. Ben taught a workshop on energy conservation in the built environment and Simi organized a tour of the zero energy Mill building in Holyoke and a workshop about passive design. This is the second year that BCT faculty have volunteered to teach building construction and technology concepts to Eureka! scholars. Peggi Clouston offered workshop during the inaugural summer (2013) on bridge design. Both Governor Deval Patrick and Senator Elizabeth Warren have recognized the program and thanked the faculty during their visits for volunteering their energy and time in this vitally important project.
