Summary: The mostly forested landscapes of Massachusetts are owned primarily by tens of thousands of family forest owners. Every day, landowners make decisions about the future of their land. Often times these decisions arise suddenly and are made without the benefit of knowing their full suite of options. We developed a net present value (NPV) analysis over a 30-year period for ownerships of 15, 30, 60, and 150 acres for the Deerfield River Watershed for four forest conservation tools: timber management, timber management plus current use, timber management plus current use plus the sale of a conservation restriction, and the sale of a conservation restriction only.
