William Maclay, Founding Principal of Maclay Architects, FAIA, NCARB, LEED AP

Bill is an innovator, leader, speaker, and advocate for ecological design and renewably powered buildings, communities, and planet. For nearly fifty years, Bill brings commitment, expertise, and experience in working with others to create healthy, productive, regenerative, and beautiful places for the benefit of people and living systems. Bill combines his passion to create inspiring and innovative buildings with a passion for exploring design that embodies the purpose and vision of others.

In particular, Bill’s focus is on exploring and collaborating with clients, our team and stakeholders to create a better future for all. He looks to make each project a model for what is possible, now and moving forward in small, but significant steps.

Bill has created many significant model projects including NRG Systems, the Aiken Building at UVM, the Bennington State Courthouse and Offices, and Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens. While these may be the most recognizable models, we see every project at every scale, budget, and aspiration, as a model project—an opportunity to demonstrate the best future we can offer—to find new ways to create a future that is productive, satisfying, healthy, empowering, and inspiring.

Bill has served on numerous boards, including the Vermont Businesses for Social Responsibility, Yestermorrow Design Build School, AIA VT as president, and local planning boards. Bill and Maclay Architects have received much recognition with certifications, awards, speaking, writing, videos, and Fellowship in the AIA. He is grateful and indebted to the many collaborators he has been fortunate enough to work with—including, clients, members of his office team, consultants, builders, fellow leaders in ecological design, and the large community of people who are working for a better world and future.

Bill lives in Warren with his wife and occasional visits of his two sons. He enjoys biking, cross country skiing, and experiencing the wonder, beauty, and ebb and flow of environment and nature in Vermont and on Cape Cod.
